2018 La Leche League Health Care Provider of the Year Award.
[AWARD PRESENTATION]
I would like to introduce the winner of our 2018 Health Care Provider of the Year Award. Every year, we ask for nominations from across Connecticut for a provider who has shown extraordinary dedication and commitment to supporting and advocating for breastfeeding families.
Please welcome our honoree this year, 2018 La Leche League Health Care Provider of the Year award winner, Dr. Risa Sloves.
Besides graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Biology, and then graduating summa cum laude with her Doctorate in Chiropractic, Dr. Sloves also completed three years of advanced post-doctoral training in specialized care for children and pregnant women. Dr. Sloves is active with several professional organizations including the Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics and The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and locally she is the founder of an educational and support network of female health care providers for mothers and their families called WOW: Women of Wellness. The network covers the spectrum of pre and post-natal healthcare for women and children, from chiropractors and physical therapists to nurses and lactation consultants, to naturopaths, acupuncturists, and sleep consultants. In private practice together with her husband in Norwalk since 1992, she is one of the few chiropractors in the state certified in breech turning techniques.
What I am about to share with you comes directly from those who nominated her for this award:
“Risa is a skilled practitioner who specializes in treating women and infants. She is especially knowledgable about breastfeeding issues in both mothers and babies. Her expertise in craniosacral therapy for infants with suck problems is extensive and she has helped so many of the infants I have referred to her.”
Another writes: “I recommend Dr. Sloves to everyone. She was there for me throughout pregnancy and then immediately with my newborn. She helped me through painful breastfeeding, identifying a tongue tie and torticollis and helping us with adjustments, cranial sacral therapy and exercises to do at home. She creates a comfortable safe environment for women during such a vulnerable life stage. I know for a fact that I am not the only one that has cried in her office. She is caring and personable while maintaining her professionalism. I truly feel that I wouldn't have made it through successfully breastfeeding my daughter for 26 months without her. She without a doubt deserves this recognition!”
Thank you, Dr. Sloves, for everything you do for breastfeeding families. You are a wonderful example for the rest of us of what breastfeeding support can and should look like in our state. Congratulations on earning the 2018 Healthcare Provider of the Year Award.
